In this exercise, you will identify businesses that are considered “Deaf-friendly” in your area.

This may include restaurants, service providers such as lawyers, dentists, mechanics, and carpenters, and stores.

Explain why these companies are considered Deaf-friendly.

Factors that earn the “Deaf-friendly” designation might include:

Owners who are Deaf
Owners who have Deaf people in their families
Staff who can sign
Business practices that are hospitable to Deaf consumers such as:
Signing staff
Easy to lipread staff members
Paper and pencil readily available as needed
Interpreters provided as requested
Interpreters always arranged
Well-lighted areas
