READING 1a: Respecting Deaf People’s Space
When visiting a community that is foreign to you, it is considerate to do your best to display appropriate behavior. You should have the same expectation for yourself when attending Deaf events. It is also important to realize that while the experience of meeting and interacting with Deaf individuals may be novel to you, Deaf people live among hearing people their entire lives. For many Deaf people, Deaf events allow for camaraderie among others who share the same language and culture. In essence, the Deaf community provides Deaf people with a respite from the daily grind of operating in a non-signing world. For this reason, it is courteous of you to respect the space that Deaf people have created for themselves by exhibiting appropriate behavior at Deaf events.
