EXERCISE 7f: Seeking input from the team interpreter – Reaction by Deaf People

In this exercise you will explore your reactions to how Deaf people feel when interpreters process their work in the presence of Deaf people using spoken English.

After an interpreted session, some interpreters discuss their work with each other in spoken English only, even with Deaf people remaining in the room.  Here are some reactions from Deaf people about this practice.

For each of the three reactions in the exercise, please share your thoughts.  For example, you may completely understand why Deaf people would react that way.  Or you could explain why you would be puzzled about the reaction.  Or you could state that you were disappointed and sorry that Deaf people would have to put up with this kind of insensitive practice.
