Trying to be polite and waiting to be invited to join a signing group can result in an undesired reaction from Deaf people.
For example, situating yourself close-by but away from the signing group could give Deaf people the unintended impression that you are not really interested in interacting with them.
It takes confidence to ask to join a group of signers.
