1. Question
Observe spoken conversations taking place. Pay attention to the listeners. Make a note of things they do to support the conversation and/or indicate that they are following the discourse.
Non-verbal cues might include head nodding or head shaking. Examples of verbal cues might include: “Yes, yes”, “That’s right”, and “Hmmm”.
Then do the same with signed conversations. Observe and document how listeners support a conversation using ASL discourse conventions.
