—> DO Scene 2 Exercise 1: Deaf people in your environment/Your hearing privilege
When You Are the Only Hearing Person
In the video, you saw Amy deal with being the only hearing person in a group of Deaf diners at a restaurant.
As you get to know Deaf people socially, this may well be a situation you will also face and need to decide how to handle.
It is always a good idea to check with your Deaf friend(s) regarding their preferences.
And remember that in a group of Deaf people, there may be several different answers depending on each individual’s preferred mode of communication.
You may also find yourself in a store, airport or other facility and notice some Deaf people that you don’t know who are experiencing communication difficulties or missing out on information that is being publicly shared (e.g., through a loudspeaker).
What is your responsibility in these situations?
